Swiergon Looks Ahead To The Season

Ahead of the 2019 season, 1st XI skipper Rob Swiergon gives his thoughts for the season ahead.

Do you have any goals for the club this season?
Ideally to win some silverware, I’d love to win the Aberdeenshire Cup for all the guys who have played for many years without ever managing to do it, but we hope to put a challenge in for the title, but I think every single side this season has a shot at it. Things look really competitive this year, with teams likely to be taking points off each other. For the club overall, it would be ideal if the 2nd XI could consolidate in Grade 2 and the Sunday XI can help produce some more young players.

What do you feel the 1st XI can achieve?
We are capable of beating all sides but as I say, there will be no easy games, we will be aiming to win as many games as we can on all fronts.  Realistically, the Challenge Cup is very tough as most teams have a pro and overseas amateur but Grade 1 and the Aberdeenshire Cup demonstrate realistic targets, but many other clubs will also fancy their chances.

What are you most most looking forward to this year?
Hopefully some more good weather and good fair cricket every week. In terms of players that can catch the eye, I have said it many times before, but I am looking forward to Callum Herd bowling.  He offers something different and when he gets into a rhythm he is very good at bowling to a plan.

Any changes in personnel this season?
We’ve obviously lost Eddie Steinson, who is a big miss, but we may see him for a couple of games in the summer.  Apart from that the squad is broadly similar to last year. Fraser Proud comes into the team, he’s an all rounder who has played at a good standard and I hope he can help some of the other guys jump up a another level.  We also have the unexpected bonus that Mahesh has returned to Aberdeen and is available on Saturdays. He played a few years ago and showed he is a good bowler and a dangerous hitter, so it will be great to see what he can offer. Geoff Morrison will be taking the gloves this season which also increases options and allows us to play around the batsmen and bowler combinations this year.

Personal goals for the season?
Personally I’d love to pass 500 runs in the season.  I’ve got lots of starts before but fallen away. A ton for FPs would go down a treat but as long as the team is doing well and enjoying things, then that is the most important thing.  I of course will also be looking to turn the golden arm over where I can which I am sure will thrill my teammates.
